Most business owners in Oman have heard the story: someone "tried Google Ads", spent a few hundred rials, got nothing, and decided it does not work here. In almost every case, the problem was not Google. It was the setup. Google Ads in Oman can be one of the most efficient ways to win customers, because you only pay to appear in front of people who are already searching for what you sell.
This guide explains how Google Ads works, how to set up a first campaign sensibly, and the mistakes that quietly drain budgets.
Why Google Ads is different from social media ads
On Instagram or Snapchat, you interrupt people while they are scrolling. On Google, people come to you. Someone typing "AC repair Al Mawaleh" or "forklift rental Sohar" has a problem and wants a solution now. That is called search intent, and it is why search ads often bring fewer clicks but better enquiries than social ads.
Both have their place. Social media builds awareness and desire. Google Ads captures demand that already exists.
How Google Ads pricing actually works
Google Ads runs as an auction. You choose keywords, and every time someone searches, Google decides which adverts to show based on your bid and the quality of your advert and landing page. You usually pay only when someone clicks.
The key point: a well-written advert that leads to a relevant page can beat a competitor who bids more. You do not need the biggest budget to win, you need the most relevant setup.
Step 1: Choose the right campaign type
Google will encourage you towards automated campaign types. For a first campaign in Oman, a plain Search campaign is usually the safest choice because you control exactly which searches you appear for and you can read the results easily. Once you have conversion tracking and some data, you can test automated options.
Step 2: Pick keywords that show buying intent
Good keywords describe a need plus a sign of readiness. Compare:
- "interior design" (broad, could be students, inspiration, jobs)
- "interior design company Muscat" (someone looking for a supplier)
- "villa interior fit out Al Mouj" (very specific, high intent)
Start with a short list of specific phrases. Think about how your customers actually type, including Arabic searches and common English spellings. Many people in Oman search in English for services and in Arabic for everyday products, so test both.
Step 3: Add negative keywords from day one
Negative keywords tell Google where not to show your advert. Without them, a company selling cranes can pay for clicks from people searching "crane toy", "crane jobs Oman" or "crane bird". Common negatives for most businesses include: jobs, vacancy, salary, free, course, training, PDF, and second-hand (if you only sell new).
Check the Search terms report every week in the first month and keep adding negatives. This single habit saves more money than anything else.
Step 4: Set location targeting carefully
By default, Google may show your ads to people "interested in" your location, which can include people abroad. If you only serve customers inside Oman, set the location option to people in or regularly in your target areas. If you only deliver within Muscat, target Muscat rather than the whole country.
Step 5: Write ads that answer the searcher
A good search advert mirrors the search and gives a reason to click:
- Include the service and the area: "Same-Day AC Repair in Muscat".
- Give a concrete benefit: response time, warranty, free inspection, Arabic and English support.
- Add a clear action: "Call now", "WhatsApp us", "Get a quote today".
- Use extensions (now called assets): call button, location, sitelinks to key pages.
Step 6: Send clicks to a page that converts
Sending ad traffic to a homepage is one of the most common mistakes. The person searched for something specific, so take them to a page about exactly that, with a visible phone number and WhatsApp button, prices or "from" prices where possible, photos of real work and a short form. Our guide to website design in Oman covers what makes a page convert on mobile.
Step 7: Track enquiries, not just clicks
Clicks are not customers. Before you spend seriously, set up conversion tracking for calls, WhatsApp clicks and form submissions. Then you can see which keywords bring enquiries and which only bring visitors. Without tracking, you are guessing.
Mistakes we see most often in Oman
- Accepting every automatic recommendation. Some are useful, many simply increase spend. Review them before applying.
- Broad match keywords with no negatives. This is how budgets disappear on irrelevant searches.
- Running ads while the phone goes unanswered. Schedule ads for your working hours, or make sure someone replies on WhatsApp quickly.
- Judging results in three days. Give a campaign a few weeks of data and steady optimisation before deciding.
- Forgetting the Google Business Profile. Many local searches show the map pack above or near the ads. See our Google Business Profile guide.
How much should you start with?
Start with a budget you are comfortable treating as a learning investment for one to two months. The goal of the first phase is not maximum sales, it is finding the keywords and messages that bring real enquiries. Once you know that, you scale what works and cut what does not.
