Every summer, while most of the Gulf bakes in the heat, Dhofar turns green. The Khareef monsoon brings mist, light rain and cool air to Salalah from roughly late June to late September, and visitors arrive from across Oman and the wider GCC. For hotels, restaurants, tour operators, car rental firms and shops in the region, these few months can shape the whole year. Good Salalah Khareef marketing is what decides whether those visitors find you or your neighbour.
The best time to plan it is not June. It is now, in the quieter months, when you have time to fix your online presence, gather content and build the audiences you will need when the season starts. This guide walks through what to do, step by step.
Why Khareef is different from any other season
Khareef is not like Ramadan or White Friday, when your usual customers simply buy more. During Khareef, many of your customers are people who have never heard of you. They are planning a trip from Muscat, Dubai, Riyadh or Kuwait, and they make most of their decisions on their phones, often before they leave home.
- Visitors search before they travel. They look for hotels, apartments, restaurants, things to do and car hire weeks in advance.
- Families travel together. Many trips are planned around children, grandparents and big groups, so comfort, space and family-friendly options matter.
- Decisions continue on arrival. Once in Salalah, people search "near me" for food, fuel, coffee, shopping and activities, often in a hurry and in the mist.
- The window is short. A few busy months must carry the business through the quieter rest of the year.
Step 1: Get found on Google Maps first
For a visitor in an unfamiliar city, Google Maps is the guidebook. If your business is missing, has the wrong pin or shows old opening hours, you lose customers who were standing a few hundred metres away.
- Claim and verify your Google Business Profile and check that the pin is exactly where your entrance is.
- Write your business name, description and services in both Arabic and English.
- Add special Khareef opening hours, and update them if you change hours during the season.
- Upload fresh, real photos: the inside, the outside, parking, family seating, your best dishes or rooms.
- Reply to every review, politely and quickly.
Our Google Business Profile guide for Omani businesses covers each of these settings in more detail.
Step 2: Speak to visitors in their own words
Your Khareef audience is mixed. Omani families from other governorates, Gulf visitors from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain, and residents of other nationalities living in the region all search in different ways.
- Write your main pages, posts and ads in clear Gulf-friendly Arabic, not stiff translated text.
- Keep an English version for residents and other travellers.
- Use the words people actually search: "Salalah Khareef", "خريف صلالة", "things to do in Salalah", "مطاعم صلالة", "شقق مفروشة صلالة" and similar phrases.
- Answer the questions visitors always ask: distance from the airport and main attractions, parking, family sections, prices, booking and payment.
Step 3: Build a simple season page or landing page
Do not send ad traffic to your homepage and hope people find their way. Create one page focused on the season, in Arabic and English, that answers the visitor's questions in one place:
- What you offer during Khareef (packages, menus, tours, rooms, rental options)
- Where you are, with a Google Maps link and directions
- Opening hours and booking rules for the season
- Clear prices or "starting from" rates where possible
- A large WhatsApp button and a phone number that someone actually answers
Make sure the page loads quickly on a mobile phone over a normal data connection. Many visitors will open it on the road or in a busy café.
Step 4: Plan your content around the green season
Khareef is one of the most photographed times of the year in Oman. Mist on the mountains, waterfalls, green valleys and camels in the fog are beautiful, and people love sharing them. Use that energy, but keep your business at the centre:
- Short videos showing the real experience: the view from your terrace, a family enjoying a meal, a tour in the hills.
- Practical posts: "How to spend a weekend in Salalah", "Best spots for families", "What to pack for Khareef".
- Daily or weekly updates on the weather and road conditions, which build trust and give people a reason to follow you.
- Stories and Reels for quick updates; save the best clips as Highlights so new visitors see them first.
Not sure where to post? Our comparison of Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat in Oman and the GCC explains which platform fits which audience. Snapchat and TikTok are especially useful for reaching younger Gulf travellers.
Keep content modest and respectful. Show families and landscapes rather than anything that might feel out of place, and always ask permission before filming guests.
Step 5: Use paid ads with smart targeting
Paid ads let you reach people before they arrive and while they are in town. A practical approach:
Before the season
Target people in Muscat and other GCC cities who are interested in travel, family trips and Oman. Promote early booking offers and packages. Search ads on Google can catch people looking for "Salalah hotels" or "Khareef trips".
During the season
Narrow your targeting to people currently in Salalah and the surrounding area. Promote things people decide on the day: restaurants, cafés, activities, shopping and car services. Change creatives often, because the same visitors will see your ads more than once.
Start with modest budgets, test two or three messages, and put more money behind the ones that bring real bookings and WhatsApp chats, not just likes.
Step 6: Make WhatsApp your booking desk
In Oman and the Gulf, many bookings happen in a chat. During the peak weeks, slow replies mean lost customers, because visitors will simply message the next business on the list.
- Set up WhatsApp Business with your location, hours and catalogue.
- Prepare quick replies in Arabic and English for prices, availability, directions and payment.
- Agree who answers messages at each time of day, including evenings and weekends.
- After a booking, send a short confirmation with your location pin.
Step 7: Turn one-time visitors into returning guests
Khareef visitors often come back the following year, and they recommend places to friends and family. Make it easy for them to remember you:
- Ask happy customers for a Google review before they leave.
- Invite them, with their permission, to join your WhatsApp list or follow your social pages.
- After the season, share a thank-you message and an early-bird offer for next year.
- Look at what worked: which ads, posts and channels brought real customers, and write it down for next season.
A simple Khareef marketing timeline
- Now to early spring: fix your Google Business Profile, website and season page. Plan packages.
- Two to three months before: shoot photos and videos, prepare Arabic and English content, set up ad accounts and tracking.
- Four to six weeks before: launch early-booking campaigns for GCC and Muscat audiences.
- During the season: post regularly, run local ads, answer WhatsApp fast and collect reviews.
- After the season: thank customers, review results and plan the next year.
