Two clinics, two car garages or two cafés sit next to each other on Google Maps. One has 14 reviews from three years ago. The other has 230 reviews, many from last month, with friendly replies from the owner. Which one would you call?
Google reviews in Oman have become one of the biggest factors in who gets chosen. They affect where you appear on Google Maps, how trustworthy you look and, increasingly, what AI assistants say about you. Yet many good businesses have very few reviews, simply because they never ask.
Why reviews matter so much
- Trust: customers in Oman rely heavily on recommendations, and reviews are recommendations from strangers.
- Ranking: review count, rating and recency are among the signals Google considers for local results.
- Conversion: a strong rating turns a profile view into a call, WhatsApp message or visit.
- Feedback: reviews tell you what customers love and what needs fixing.
The rules you must not break
Google's policies are strict, and breaking them can get reviews removed or your profile restricted:
- No incentives. Do not offer discounts, gifts or prizes in exchange for reviews.
- No fake reviews. Not from staff, family, friends or paid services.
- No review gating. Do not ask only happy customers while discouraging unhappy ones from reviewing.
- No reviews written for the customer. They must be the customer's own words.
The good news: you do not need tricks. You need a simple, consistent habit of asking.
Step 1: Get your direct review link
In your Google Business Profile, find the option to "Ask for reviews" and copy the short link. This takes customers straight to the review box, with no searching. Turn it into a QR code as well. If you have not set up your profile properly yet, start with our Google Business Profile guide.
Step 2: Ask at the right moment
The best time to ask is when the customer is happiest:
- When a car is returned clean and fixed.
- When a patient thanks the doctor.
- When a project is handed over and the client says "Shukran, excellent work".
- When a regular customer compliments the food.
A simple, sincere request works: "We're a local business and reviews really help us. Would you mind leaving us a quick review on Google? Here's the link."
Step 3: Make it easy everywhere
- Send the link on WhatsApp after the service, with a short thank-you message in Arabic and English.
- Put a QR code at the counter, on tables, receipts and invoices.
- Add the link to email signatures and follow-up messages.
- Train staff to ask, and explain why it matters.
Step 4: Reply to every review
Replies show future customers that you care. Keep them personal and short:
- Positive: thank them by name, mention what they enjoyed, invite them back.
- Arabic reviews: reply in Arabic. It shows respect and effort.
- Negative: stay calm, apologise for the experience, avoid arguing in public, and offer to resolve it privately with a phone number or WhatsApp.
Handling negative reviews
Every business gets an unhappy review eventually. A thoughtful, professional reply can actually increase trust, because it shows how you handle problems. Fix the underlying issue where the complaint is fair. If a review clearly breaks Google's policies, for example it is spam, offensive or from someone who was never a customer, you can report it through your profile. Do not expect every unfair review to be removed, so focus on getting more genuine ones.
Ask customers to be specific
Reviews that mention the service and location ("Great AC servicing in Al Khoud, they came the same day") are more helpful to readers and give Google more context. You can gently suggest: "If you could mention which service we did, that really helps others." Never write it for them.
Make it a weekly habit
Set a simple target, such as asking every customer for a week, and track how many new reviews arrive. Steady, recent reviews look far more natural and trustworthy than a sudden burst. Our SEO guide for Oman explains how reviews fit into your wider local search strategy.
